Sober Curious
“I had actually found Sophia Recovery because my niece, she had an addiction. Her son had taken his life and she needed help. There weren’t any family members really here to help her. In looking for things for her, I came across Sophia Recovery and I thought, well I’m gonna keep that in the back of my mind for me.”
“My stepmom, I didn’t even know she was in AA [Alcoholics Anonymous] or anything. I saw this beautiful person. She always struggled with depression, I knew that. But after AA I saw her starting to come out of her room, and going out, and even just dressing better. Like you could just tell there was a lightness and happiness that I hadn’t seen before. Then she let me know that she was in AA and she actually brought me to a meeting with her, just so I could see what was going on.”
“I think she was hoping I would keep going with her, which I did for a little bit thankfully. But she never pushed me. She was very accepting and very loving and very understanding too if it wasn’t my time. But she planted that seed.”
“Come in and give it a try. If the first person you talk to isn’t somebody that you gel with, you can find somebody else. There are all kinds of lovely ladies in here that are willing to share their stories and listen to yours and help navigate through whatever it is that you’re going through, whether it’s drugs or alcohol. Somebody that has been through it, and can help you, and not be judgmental. Not look at you like you’re crazy – ‘cause they’ve been there.”
“One day it just occurred to me that if I don’t do something, it’s never gonna get any better. I just decided to stop altogether… It was horrible when I tried to quit. I didn’t really think I had a problem until I went to Cuba and I got sick. I couldn’t drink. Within a couple of days, I was starting to experience withdrawal and I was just like, “holy crap.”
“I came home and talked to my doctors, and we did a withdrawal program… [When I first came to Sophia Recovery Centre] I was just terrified. I was gonna meet someone else who had the same thing that I had. But even though I was terrified, I was kind of encouraged because I wanted to talk to somebody who understood it.”
